“We were in a white room,” Jax said softly.<\/p>\n

His words made her freeze. Slowly, she looked into his face. “What?” she asked weakly.<\/p>\n

“Everything was white\u2014the floor, the walls, the ceiling. No door. No windows. There was a large skylight in the ceiling. The only furniture in the room was a big desk. I think it was mahogany.”<\/p>\n

Mike’s heart pounded. He described her fantasy perfectly. That wasn’t possible. “How\u2014”<\/p>\n

“We stood in the middle of the room,” he continued before she could finish her question. “I wasn’t sure what to do. I don’t think you knew either. You stood still, your arms wrapped across your stomach, frantically looking at every corner of the room.”<\/p>\n

“Looking for a way out,” she whispered.<\/p>\n

Jax nodded. “That’s what I figured. After a few minutes, we knew there was no way out. We started talking…”<\/p>\n

“About our jobs…”<\/p>\n

“And our friendship. I teased you about your frizzy hair.” He touched her hair, wrapped a thick tendril around his finger. “Your hair is beautiful, Michaela, not frizzy.”<\/p>\n

Her eyelids grew heavy when he ran his hand beneath her hair to caress her neck. “You touched me\u00a0like this, and kissed me.”<\/p>\n

“You kissed me back.” He stepped closer to her. “Sunshine came through the skylight. It highlighted your hair, made it shiny. I kept running my hands through it. I couldn’t get enough of touching it.”<\/p>\n

“You asked me if I was afraid.”<\/p>\n

Jax nodded again. “You said you were, that you were afraid I’d be disappointed in you. I told you I could never be disappointed in you.”<\/p>\n

A thousand butterflies had somehow taken up residence in Mike’s stomach and fought for their own space. It hadn’t been a fantasy or a daydream. She’d actually been with Jax in that room. They’d actually…<\/p>\n

“We made love,” she said, her voice shaky.<\/p>\n
